The problem with aspects is that some of them are boring and poorly balanced, not that they aren't sets. Now you can get X and Y without Z and you can get Z and Y without X. Blizz can design a set bonus, and instead of saying 'When these are together they do X, Y and Z' and instead put X, Y and Z on item X, Y and Z. It doesn't have to be perfect parity, but ideally your legendary items should generally each add a somewhat equal amount of power to your character so that moving that one step closer feels rewarding for each piece.Īnd here is a fact about formally designed set bonuses: They limit customizability. I might slightly exaggerate, but the point is correct. So once you get that one final item of the set, then your character goes from being a Torment 3 character to a Torment 16 character with one item. 2 set piece does fuck all, 4 set piece does fuck all, 6 set piece increase your skill damage by 16,000%. This is designed in the most atrocious way in D3.

My take on the problem with sets (especially the way they are used in D3) is that items lose their individual value, and are only valuable once they are together, and specifically when they are all together.
